AnyVan's figures are averages across every job it books in each distance band, including single items, so they sit below the cost of moving a whole flat. We Got The Move's table is that platform's own estimate, and the intercity and part-load figures come from Konnect You's removals data (September 2026). Ask for a fixed quote for your route.
What moves the price
- Distance drives the price but not in a straight line: AnyVan's equivalent hourly rate falls from £63 under 2 miles to £27 at 200 miles or more.
- The empty return leg has to be paid for somewhere, which is why part loads and return loads come in 15 to 30% cheaper in Konnect You's guide.
- Drivers' hours limits of 10 hours driving and 11 hours on duty a day (GOV.UK) can turn a 400-mile job into a two-day one with an overnight stop.
- Volume sets the van size and the loading time at each end, so a three-bed home costs more than twice a studio over the same distance in We Got The Move's figures.
- Depot to depot charging adds the firm's own travel to and from its base, according to Konnect You.
- Fixed dates cost more than a flexible window, because a flexible job can be fitted onto a van already making the trip.

Questions about long distance
How many hours can a van driver drive in a day?
Under the GB domestic rules, which cover goods vans up to 3.5 tonnes, the limit is 10 hours of driving a day and 11 hours on duty (GOV.UK, checked October 2026). Loading and unloading count towards the duty limit, so a long route with loading at both ends may need an overnight stop.
Is it cheaper to hire a van and drive it myself?
Fantastic Services puts self-drive van hire at £60 to £150 a day plus fuel (September 2026). On a long route you also pay fuel back, a second day's hire if the van goes back late, and your own travel home. Add those up before comparing with a part-load quote.
