Starting a man and van business in 2026: costs and rules

A new Ford Transit Custom starts at about £32,000 before VAT (Carwow, 2026 review), tax on most vans is £360 a year, and you must register for VAT once turnover passes £90,000 in any 12 months (GOV.UK, October 2026).

Goods in transit insurance: £10,000 to £50,000 per load

Goods in transit cover for removals typically runs from £10,000 to £50,000 per load, with single items often capped at £40, £100 or £500 unless you declare them (A2B Moving, May 2026).

Do I need an operator licence for a man and van?

In Great Britain you need a goods vehicle operator licence for a vehicle over 3,500 kg gross plated weight, and since 21 May 2022 for vans over 2,500 kg carrying goods for hire or reward in the EU (GOV.UK, October 2026).

Van driving licence categories: B, C1, towing and hours

A category B car licence covers vans up to 3,500 kg, or up to 4,250 kg for electric and hydrogen vans, and lets you tow a trailer up to 3,500 kg within a 7,000 kg combined limit (GOV.UK, October 2026).

Waste carrier registration for man and van firms: £191.02

A man and van that takes away customers' rubbish needs an upper tier waste carrier registration, which costs £191.02 in England and £130.25 to renew every 3 years (GOV.UK, October 2026).

Pricing a man and van job: hourly, fixed, mileage, deposits

Man and van firms charge £50 to £80 an hour outside London and £60 to £100 in London, usually with a two to three hour minimum (Fantastic Services, September 2026).

How to get listed

Use the add your business form. It asks for the business name, the town you are based in, a phone number, a website if you have one and the services you offer; put the vans you run and the crew sizes you send in the description. We check it against your own website or other published details before it goes live. Booking platforms and networks that pass jobs on are not listed.

How we decide the order

Premium listings appear towards the top of your town's lists, town pages and service pages. When several businesses in a town have Premium, they take turns at the top. Below them, listings we checked most recently come first, then the most complete ones.

Premium

Premium is £12 a month plus VAT. You can cancel renewal at any time and your subscription will not renew any further. It adds enquiries by email from your listing, your website as a clickable link, your hourly rates and fixed prices, a way to show you are free this week or can do same-day jobs, photos of your own vans and a short note to customers.
