What moves the price

  • Type is the first driver: AnyVan charges almost twice as much for a grand as for an upright within London, £213 against £108.
  • Distance comes next, though the gap between the two narrows on longer routes: from London to Manchester a grand costs £435 and an upright £308.
  • Weight sets the crew, from about 136 kg for a small upright to 480 kg for a concert grand, and the PTA advises at least three people to lift a grand.
  • Stairs and tight turns add people and time; AnyVan names five flights of stairs as one of its pricing factors.
  • Taking off a grand's legs, lyre and lid and refitting them at the other end is labour an upright does not need.
  • Window hoists, door frame removal or a long carry from the van are quoted separately because they change the equipment and the crew.

Questions about piano moving

How do movers get a piano up stairs?

An upright goes on a piano trolley or is carried in straps one step at a time, with people above and below it. A grand comes apart, legs, lyre and lid off, and the body is strapped on its side to a padded board. AnyVan lists a piano going up five flights of stairs as one of the factors in its price.

Is my piano insured during a move?

Check the firm's cover limit against the piano's value. AnyVan includes up to £50,000 compensation cover per booking, subject to its terms (October 2026). Ask any firm for its limit in writing before the move.
