Hourly rates come from Checkatrade's and MyBuilder's August 2026 guides, Fantastic Services' cost guide (September 2026) and Compare the Man and Van's March 2026 pages. They are platforms' and operators' own figures, not independent surveys. MyBuilder's ranges sit below Checkatrade's, at £35 to £60 for one person and £45 to £80 for two, so compare two or three quotes worked out the same way. ULEZ and Congestion Charge figures are TfL's, checked October 2026.

What moves the price

  • Crew size: each extra person adds £14 to £16 an hour to Checkatrade's averages, but can shorten the job.
  • Van size: Compare the Man and Van's London rates run from £35 an hour for a small van you load yourself to £82 for a Luton with a driver and helper.
  • The minimum booking: most firms charge for at least two hours, so a 40 minute job costs the same as a two-hour one.
  • Travel and mileage: some firms bill from their base and back, and some charge per mile beyond a local radius.
  • London: Fantastic Services puts two-person rates in London and the South East £10 to £20 an hour above the rest of the UK, before the ULEZ and Congestion Charge.
  • Access: stairs, lifts and a long carry from the van add time, and Compare the Man and Van found upper floor loading in London took about 20% longer.

Questions about man and van

What insurance should a man and van have?

Goods in transit cover for your belongings and public liability cover for damage to property or people. Neither is a legal requirement, so ask for the limits. A2B Moving says goods in transit typically covers £10,000 to £50,000 a load, often with per-item caps of £40 to £500 unless you declare valuable items (May 2026).

What size van do I need?

A 1-bed flat usually needs an LWB van of 11 to 15 cubic metres, and a 2-bed a 3.5 tonne Luton of 17 to 20. Compare the Man and Van's size guide rates an LWB for 1 to 2 bed flats and a Luton of 18 to 20 cubic metres for 2 to 3 bed homes (checked October 2026).
