Man and van
Same day man and van
A same day man and van costs £50 to £80 an hour for two people and a van outside London and £60 to £100 in London, with a two to three hour minimum (Fantastic Services, September 2026). A single item or a few boxes can often be moved within hours. A whole flat is harder, because two-person crews with Luton vans fill up first, especially at month end.
What it costs and what it covers
Typical price. With the usual two to three hour minimum, a same day job for two people and a van starts at about £100 to £160 outside London and £120 to £200 in London, at Fantastic Services' hourly rates (cost guide, September 2026). See the man and van cost guide.
Typical jobs
- Collecting a wardrobe from a Facebook Marketplace seller who needs it gone by this evening
- Moving a student's boxes and a desk out of a room when a tenancy ends sooner than planned
- Picking up a fridge freezer from a shop after the store's own delivery slot fell through
- Taking a few boxes and a bike to a storage unit before the site closes for the day
- Fetching a sofa from a relative's house across town after another booking was cancelled
What is involved
What same day means in practice. A firm that advertises same day work usually means it will take the job if a van and driver are free that day, not that one is waiting. AnyVan says it takes same-day and same-week bookings seven days a week, bank holidays included (October 2026). Compare the Man and Van says same-day and next-day options are often available in Manchester, depending on the route, the size of the move and which drivers are free. Asking at 9am gives far more choice than asking at 4pm.
Does same day cost more? The price guides give same day work at the usual hourly rates. The cost rises in other ways: the nearest free driver may be further away, the only slot may fall after normal hours, or only a bigger van is free. Fantastic Services' London one-driver service is £43 an hour between 7am and 7pm, with extra fees later in the evening (October 2026). Ask for the price and the arrival time in the same message.
Jobs that suit short notice. Single items, marketplace collections, a few boxes and small student moves suit a short-notice slot, because one driver with a Transit-sized van can fit them between booked jobs; Fantastic Services' Transit vans hold up to 15 cubic metres. Check who lifts: that firm's one-driver London service expects the customer to load and unload. A whole flat needs two people, a Luton van and half a day or more, and Fantastic Services estimates 4 to 6 hours for a one or two-bed flat (September 2026). Book a whole flat further ahead, especially for a Friday, a month end or a summer weekend.
Council parking suspensions need notice, 3 to 10 working days at most of the 67 councils this site has checked (October 2026), so a same day van uses whatever legal space is free on the street; the hub page covers loading rules.
Choosing a firm
Put everything in the first message: both postcodes, floor levels, lifts, where the van can stop, and the items with rough sizes and photos. A firm answering a same day request decides in minutes whether the job fits its van and its afternoon, and a full description lets it say yes quickly.
Ask for a firm arrival window and either a total price or the hourly rate, the minimum and when the clock starts. Ask whether the driver comes alone or with a helper, and if you will be expected to lift. Ask for the driver's name and the van registration before it arrives.
If nobody is free today, ask about first thing tomorrow. An early slot the next morning avoids evening rates and gives you time to clear a space outside the door.

Common questions
Can I get a man and van today?
Often, for a small job. AnyVan takes same-day bookings seven days a week, and Compare the Man and Van says same-day options are often available, depending on which drivers are free (October 2026). Ask early in the day and send photos so a firm can say yes quickly.
How much does a same day man and van cost?
Usually the normal hourly rate: £50 to £80 an hour for two people and a van outside London and £60 to £100 in London, with a two to three hour minimum (Fantastic Services, September 2026). Work after 7pm can cost more.
Is a last minute man and van more expensive?
Not always: a firm with a gap in its day usually charges its usual rate. It costs more when the only free slot is in the evening, the driver travels further, or only a larger van is left. AnyVan says booking ahead gives a wider choice of dates and better prices.
Can a man and van move a whole flat at short notice?
It is possible but harder. A flat needs two people and a Luton van for several hours, and Fantastic Services estimates 4 to 6 hours for a one or two-bed flat (September 2026). Month ends and summer weekends are the hardest times to find a crew.
