Which day is cheapest for a move?

Sunday and mid-week days are usually cheaper than Friday and Saturday. Konnect You (formerly Compare My Move), using more than 170,000 removals from the past year, puts Sunday as the cheapest day at £900 on average and Tuesday as the cheapest weekday at £1,003, about 14% less than Thursday, the dearest day. Friday averaged £1,076 (September 2026).

Reallymoving says Fridays and Saturdays are when most people move, so moving during the week or on a Sunday is usually cheaper (July 2026). Compare the Man and Van says Tuesday to Thursday or mid-month often keeps prices lower. The sources do not agree on every day, so ask a firm for prices on two or three dates.

Why is Friday the busiest day to move?

Friday is the traditional day for house sales to complete, as reallymoving's conveyancing guide notes (January 2026), and a Friday move leaves the weekend to unpack. HomeOwners Alliance figures from reallymoving put 29% of moves on a Friday, 16% on a Saturday, 15% on a Monday, 10% on a Tuesday and 5% on a Sunday (August 2026).

Busy days bring more risk of delay. HomeOwners Alliance reports that 85% of removal firms say delays are more likely on busy days, and that delays cost movers an average of £509, with one in seven losing more than £1,000. Renters and people not in a chain can usually pick a quieter day.

Does the end of the month cost more?

Often, yes. Fantastic Services names weekends, month-ends and the summer peak as the busiest and dearest times to book (September 2026). Getamover's 2023 data names the first and last days of the month among the busiest.

A mid-month date, away from the turn of the month, often finds a firm with more spare vans and crews. If your date is flexible, ask a firm about two or three.

Which months and holidays are busiest?

August is the busiest month and January and February the quietest. HomeOwners Alliance says August has been the busiest month for moves for 14 years in a row, followed by July, and predicted Friday 28 August 2026 as the year's busiest day, with about 22,904 households moving, roughly four times the daily average of 6,000 (August 2026).

Konnect You puts February as the cheapest month at about £1,020 and August and November as the dearest at nearly £1,190 (September 2026). MyJobQuote advises avoiding school holidays and weekends where you can. Fantastic Services also lists bank holidays among the dearer dates to book a removal (September 2026).

How can you get a mid-week price?

Ask for it. HomeOwners Alliance says one in five removal firms are willing to offer mid-week deals. Give the firm two or three possible dates and ask for a price on each, because a firm with a quiet Tuesday may price it lower than a Friday.

If you are buying, ask your solicitor whether completion can be set for a mid-week day. If you are renting, ask the landlord whether the tenancy can start a day or two before the old one ends, so the move does not have to fall on the busiest day.
